but I suppose that's the point of the wide angle lens. Nice pictures, in any case. The light in Santa Monica has been very interesting the last couple of days.

I was playing around with the ultra-wide camera on my Pixel Pro 8 cellphone. My impressions about the images it generates are both positive and negative, see for yourself below........ ...

Thank you for these great pictures,

they bring back so many memories from our trip to L.A. 5 years ago. I remember strolling down the path along the Santa Monica beach and having dinner at Pier Burger. And we had our last meal in the US at the exact Mel´s you pictured here before driving ba...

My sincere pleasure once again....

That coincidence of you dining at that exact Mel's just before leaving for Europe is especially poignant. Thank you for looking and enjoying! Cheers, Filip

The pics look fine to me

Been to LA only twice and too short to do any sightseeing either time unfortunately. For me Santa Monica brings back memories of my time as a youngster in Track&Fields, Carl Lewis was my hero at that time!

I did....

T&F in high school as well. As you well know, many WPS members are LA residents, so you'd be more than welcome to visit again ........

4 and 5 for me!!!

Interesting choice....

Those two are 50 meters from one another on the same street ....

Please do! :))

they are a good part of the reason cell phones nowadays cost a thousand dollars ........

Looking good. Great walkabout series…..

Any specific negatives that you noted?

In my opinion....

 By: InHavenPro : March 15th, 2024-17:45
Primarily the horizontal distortion/warping in some images due to the curvature of the lens itself....

Ok i get you..

It is bit pronounced in #7,8,9, actually common for phone cams when go really wide.

Precisely ;)

Yes,

you are right about the interesting light patterns in recent days. I'm quite glad I had the day off yesterday in order to enjoy some of it! Thanks for looking and chiming in, cheers, Filip

Yes, phone cameras keep getting better but honest to Ansel cameras keep getting better too. The wide lens on my Apple 12 pro has a similar amount of undesirable distortion.

OK for landscapes but not so great for architecture or anything with straight lines. I'm surprised they haven't figured out how to improve that with computer trickery.

Exactly.

 By: InHavenPro : March 15th, 2024-17:54
That's the specific reason why I felt of two minds with the results. Architecture and vehicles tend to get that horizontal distortion that's pretty easily noticeable, quite annoying if the goal is to capture clean, proportional pictures........

Often you can minimize that distortion if you can gain elevation when taking the image... so that you are not having to point the lens upward but most wides will still have an

increasing amount of (usually "barrel") distortion towards the sides. There are reasons why top tier rectilinear wide angle lenses cost a lot of money!

No doubt about it.

 By: InHavenPro : March 15th, 2024-19:09
Unfortunately, elevation in Santa Monica is seldom found . There's a new Sigma 15mm f/1.4 ART lens which is a professional grade fish-eye lens that costs a pretty penny ....

It's simply....

The most recently released of the 'curved' lens category as I'd call it, it makes for a compelling astrophotography option, but then, astrophotography cameras are a whole other category of equipment to contend with........

Yes you could use a fisheye for sky shots to get a lot of sky in the image. And distortion would not be a huge deal with that application... but I think an ultrawide

rectilinear would work well for that also. Stars would appear bigger (good) but amount of sky seen would be a bit less.
